Starting out with the hard surface character I went with a quick sculpt in Zbrush just to get an idea of how some of the shapes I want will interact and look in 3D space.

Thus far I’ve done a quick block out with some very basic detailing and played around with the silhouette of the character (make sure he doesn’t look too heroic or cartoony)  and added some minor details here and there.

Next steps would be to do some paint-overs looking at a few more ideas (and possible cloth inclusion) and then separate some of the armor plates for more work and add in some of my universal meshes I have for hard surface (bolts, wires etc.)
